Challenge to Lead May 2021

Home Club of District 9810 Governor Alma Reynolds

President's Remarks
On Wednesday evening we had 22 members and 4 Guests
Good to see some of our Rotaractors come to visit.

Our Guest Speaker Dr. Adam Shahine from
MONASH BIOMEDICINE DISCOVERY INSTITUTE Infection and Immunity Program

Adam always had an interest in science. This presentation is an overview of his last 10 yrs unravelling the mysteries of biomedical infection and immunity.

Dr. Adam explained how his team worked within the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute - the focus on protein crystals (e.g. keratin) and the interface with the Australian Synchrotron at Monash.

He also gave the example of how they tackled tuberculosis using the unique molecule as targets in drug design to boost immune response - similar to current Covid 19 testing.
                   ----------------
May is Bowel Cancer Awareness month and the Australian Government is sending out the kits to people over 50 every 2 years up to the age of 75.
                   ---------------------
Thanks to Liz for organising the Schramms gardening and Clean up.

Sunday May 16th is the Respect event and we have asked if we can provide some members to help out with the police BBQ and cook up some sausages. if you can give 1 or 2 hours of time would be great. This is a Community event and is an opportunity to promote Rotary and the Rotary Club of Doncaster

Yours in Rotary

Last week on 6th-7th May, our Club's major fundraiser, the Challenge to Lead (C2L) program was conducted at the Canterbury International at Forest Hill. The program was rescheduled from October 2020 due to COVID to May this year.

C2L is a two day residential leadership program conducted by professional facilitators pro bono. This year we had a record of 21 participants from a wide range of organisations, from Not For Profits, Councils and businesses. The participants included two Rotaractors and the winner of the Manningham Business Excellence Award for 2019, John Donohue from John Donohue Auto and Mechanical Repairs, Bullen.

A number of Club members attended the breakfast where guest speaker Victor Perton (https://www.centreforoptimism.com/) gave an entertaining and inspiring presentation about the need for optimism, especially when the media too often report the negative and not the positive. At the breakfast, Kevin O'Donnell presented Heiner Karst with a PHF. Heiner has been a facilitator for the program for the past four years.

A special thanks to the Club Members who assisted in making the C2L program a success. The program would not have been a success without the dedication and professionalism of the facilitators, Alan Colvin, Lisa Galbraith and Natasha Focci. We are planning for 2021 and anticipating an increase in numbers and continuing support from organisations who have been sending employees from past years.

From the C2L Team

Welfare
While we’re getting on with the business of helping others, let’s take a moment to remember our fellow Members, Partners and Friends of the Club, who may be doing it a little tough.
We’re also thinking of our long-term absent Members whom we don’t see often enough.
I’m sure all of us know an absent or ex Member who would love to have a call from any one of us as Members of the Rotary Club of Doncaster.
If you do know anyone who is unwell, or is going through challenging times, or even if you’re up against it yourself, contact our Welfare Officer, PP Frank Evans on 9337 8493, or email frank.evans1@bigpond.com.
