BULLETIN 30062021
30 June 2021

Home Club of District 9810 Governor Alma Reynolds

President's Remarks
Wednesday Night saw us once again in lockdown and therefore on Zoom. As we had a special guest this called for a joint meeting of the cluster as well as a Rotarian from Townsville

Our Guest Speaker Kirsty Sword GusmãoAO - Officer of the Order of Australia served as the First Lady of East Timor from 2002 until 2007.
Kirsty married to Xanana Gusmão, former Prime Minister and President of East Timor, though they separated in 2015. She has 3 sons and lives in Melbourne.
Kirsty is the founding director of the Alola Foundation,[3] which seeks to improve the lives of women in Timor-Leste. This is what the talk was about.
She went to school in Bendigo and her parents were teachers
In 2013 admitted to the degree of Doctor of the University (honoris causa) by Victoria University for her community service in championing the importance of education and improving the lives of women and children in Timor-Leste.
In 2003, she published an autobiography entitled A Woman of Independence.
She gave an update on the 2 crisis points currently the main issue.
Floods caused destruction of crops and transport routes and exacerbated previous low Covid problem. Now around 1400 active Covid cases and 14 deaths.
Evacuation centres in the emergency impacted the ability of mothers to breast feed due to highly processed food and milk substitutes.
Her organisation - Alola Foundation - is focused on women with education and training. Helps with job training, seed funding for women in small business (agri), and handicraft projects in Timor -Leste by way of an economic empowerment programme.
Note there is about 17 local languages across the country, so literacy/numeracy is challenging from school years onwards.

Bunnings BBQ
Saturdays BBQ at Bunnings was a great success both in fundraising and fellowship we had a fantastic rollout of members to help out.
I had the chance to visit Sohrab on Saturday at the rehab a can report he is doing very well and should be back soon.
Yours in Rotary
Barry Halpern, President

"As we progress through the next few months we are looking forward to some exciting speakers from our own club about some of our own Projects but also some external speakers that we are largely involved
with both locally and internationally.  What has shown clearly to us this past 12 months is that we can reach out by Zoom etc across
the  varies areas that we are involved in and hear directly from them on what is occurring - very exciting.    Can I please ask that you contact me directly to discuss possible speakers you have in mind - this will make it easier to know who I am fitting in and also we will be vetting the theme of the presentation - these should relate to Rotary business.

Welfare
While we’re getting on with the business of helping others, let’s take a moment to remember our fellow Members, Partners and Friends of the Club, who may be doing it a little tough.
We’re also thinking of our long-term absent Members whom we don’t see often enough.
I’m sure all of us know an absent or ex Member who would love to have a call from any one of us as Members of the Rotary Club of Doncaster.
If you do know anyone who is unwell, or is going through challenging times, or even if you’re up against it yourself, contact our Welfare Officer, PP Frank Evans on 9337 8493, or email frank.evans1@bigpond.com.
