Home of the District Governor

ALMA REYNOLDS

President's Remarks
It was great to see members from Templestowe club join our meeting last Wednesday night.
President Felix from the RCT suggested we should do this once a month I think perhaps bi-monthly.

This morning ANZAC day PDG Russell Gurney, Shelley Gurney, Anthony Murray and I went along to the Dawn service where we laid a wreath on behalf of the Rotary Club of Doncaster

Leigh McKinnon – Chinese Anzacs

Leigh McKinnon, a researcher from the Golden Dragon Museum in Bendigo, gave an outline the history of people of Chinese descent who were ANZACs. This formed an exhibition at the Golden Dragon museum in Bendigo.
With the centenary of WW1 the Bendigo Museum in conjunction with the Melbourne Chinese Museum
formed a project to investigate the WW1 Role of diggers with Chinese background.
With various photos and documents Leigh showed the migration of Chinese to Australia, their lineage and treatment in relation to non- European descendants serving in the Army.
This migrant story goes back to Sydney in 1818 when the first known Chinese came to stay in Australia. His grandson John Joseph Shying was the first soldier in Australia of Chinese descent.
The 1840’s saw a wave of indentured labourers (cooks etc.) then the gold rush formed a substantial increase such that approximately 5000 Chinese were living around Bendigo in 1850’s.
These formed the basis of the ancestry for WW1 Chinese diggers.
Leigh gave examples of how the Defence Act 1909 encouraged discrimination against those “not substantially European” and thus refused enlistment.
Some left the country (e.g. Charles Fook) once they could not serve.
Leigh gave details of various characters of Chinese descent and anecdotes of their service and unsettled lifestyle after the war.

This zoom presentation was well received by all present.
Barry Halpern, President

PDG Russell Gurney spoke about Rotary Melbourne R100 celebrations and presented Pres Barry with a commemerative R100 $1 coin. ( Available from the Australian mint  www.ramint.gov.au)

A RAM Fun Run Fundraiser is being held in the month of April with a challenge to walk/swim/run 4km in memory of the over 400,000 people who die from Malaria each year.

Our member Shelley Gurney, RAM District Supervisor, is walking Saturday 1st May 9am at the Doncaster Athletics track.  4km or more.
Sponsorship donations can be made at a club meeting, on my  Facebook fundraising page or direct to RAM.RAWCS.COM.AU

I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who donated to the RAM cause at the 7th April club meeting, and to Sohrab who helped organise it.  Over $560 was raised and these funds are jointly sponsoring Shelley and the Manningham Rotoractors who are joining the Fundraising walk. (possibly around Ruffy Park)

Welfare
While we’re getting on with the business of helping others, let’s take a moment to remember our fellow Members, Partners and Friends of the Club, who may be doing it a little tough.
We’re also thinking of our long-term absent Members whom we don’t see often enough.
I’m sure all of us know an absent or ex Member who would love to have a call from any one of us as Members of the Rotary Club of Doncaster.
If you do know anyone who is unwell, or is going through challenging times, or even if you’re up against it yourself, contact our Welfare Officer, PP Frank Evans on 9337 8493, or email frank.evans1@bigpond.com.
